How We Reviewed

The following hiking pants were reviewed based on the following parameters: Description, Materials, Comfort, Durability, Hiking Conditions, Price, Where to Buy, and Warranty. In order to come up with our 10 Best Hiking Pants list, we needed to take all the key factors into consideration.

We reviewed many of the hiking pants on the market to come up with what we think are the best. They range from hiking pants you'd want to wear in the summer on a hot day to pants better suited for cooler temperatures. We also looked at both men and women's style pants in a variety of price ranges.

Overall Price Range

The price range for most good hiking pants is around $75. For better quality pants with more features, you will pay upwards of $100. For more budget-friendly pants, that perhaps won't last quite as long as the more durable fabrics, you may pay as little as $30 to $40.

The price of the best hiking pants depends on factors such as reinforced knees, gusset options, belted loops, convertible options, and water resistance.

MONTANE Men's Terra Pack Pant

Description

The MONTANE Men's Terra Pack hiking pant is a great option for hiking in the summer or in warmer conditions. This pant is made from a lightweight fabric that has a lot of breathability, which you will appreciate if you work up a sweat. It offers a UPF rating of 50+, making it great for hiking in the hot sun.

Materials

The MONTANE Men's Terra Pack hiking pant is made from lightweight nylon material. This is what gives it it's lightweight nature and makes it easy to pack up if you are planning to pack clothes in a backpack. For the days when it begins to rain or if you are facing lots of morning dew on your hike, these pants have a DWR coating for water resistance.

Another great feature of these pants is the zippered thigh vents to allow your legs a chance to breathe when the temperatures rise. We haven't seen this exact feature on other pants, and we like that it has this option.

Despite these pants being mostly recommended for summer use when it's warmer out, we did see that they have a good rating for wind resistance. When you don't know what the weather will bring, these pants are a good option.

Comfort

The MONTANE Men's Terra Pack pant has great stretch properties that make mobility a plus. The pant also has Articulated knees, so climbing over rocks shouldn't be a problem.

These pants have a lightweight and removable belt and multiple pockets. There are two pockets for your hands, one zippered security pocket, one thigh pocket, and one rear pocket. The pockets in the front are mesh-lined, so, if you need some extra ventilation, there is always the option to unzip these front pockets and get another breath of fresh air.

For extra cooling, the pants can be rolled up to ¾ length.

Durability

The MONTANE Men's Terra Pack hiking pants are made to last multiple hikes. We are pleased to see the extra work in these pants to ensure they will last. Around the knees and in high wear areas, such as down the legs and across the back and through the seat, the fabric is reinforced with higher quality fabric that prevents ripping. This is a great positive for rubbing thighs or along rugged or jagged rocks and branches.

Hiking Conditions

These lightweight and breathable pants are recommended for hiking in warmer climates and are great for mountain use.

And, let's be honest, these look like great hiking pants and may be the best looking pants on our best hiking pants list.

Warranty

MONTANE offers a lifetime guarantee on all their products. Should the pants have a fault other than normal wear and tear, you can contact the company, and they will repair or replace the pants free of charge. According to their website, you must have proof of purchase for them, and the pants must be purchased from a genuine MONTANE stockist to take advantage of their lifetime warranty.

Mountain Hardwear Mens Right Bank Lined Pants

Description

The Mountain Hardwear Mens Right Bank Lined pants are a comfortable option for hiking in cooler climates. These pants offer an abrasion-resistant finish on the polyester fabric construction and a fleece lining. They have an elasticized waistband with an adjustable drawstring. Comfort is the name of the game for these pants on our best hiking pants list. While they may not have the same outdoorsman look as the first pair of pants on our list, these might just make up for it in comfort.

Materials

The Mountain Hardwear Mens Right Bank Lined Pants are made from polyester with a fleece lining to keep you warmer on chilly days. There is a wooly overlay along the back waist for added comfort when you have a backpack weighing you down and pulling at your back waistline. They also have extra-durable fabric that makes these pants hold up to hiking along more rugged trails. The abrasion-resistant finish ensures that running into a branch won't mean an immediate tear.

Comfort

A fleece lining makes these pants extra soft from the inside. These are great on chilly days or for just relaxing camp side. There are two zippered pockets in the front for your hands and one zippered pocket in the rear. There is also a zippered pocket at knee level. We like that these pants have so many zippered pocket options. The pants have an elastic waist and a small, comfortable drawstring hidden behind the waistline for a sleek appearance.

These pants are not convertible and do not have a button to offer roll up, but they do cuff at the bottom if you need a slight role.

Durability

While these pants are great for hiking in cooler weather and are certainly comfortable, they do not offer water resistance.

Hiking Conditions

These pants would be great along a trail or for light mountain climbing in cooler climates. They are durable and can hold up to more time in the outdoors.

Warranty

Mountain Hardwear has a 60-day return policy from the original purchase date on items that are unworn and have tags attached. They do not offer longtime warranties on their pants.

The Sparyway Escape Slim pants are a nice hiking pant option for women. They are made from a wind-resistant fabric and offer a bit of stretch to it. The pants are water resistant since they have a DWR coating, and they also offer an elastic waistband and a UPF rating of 50+.
These pants have a contemporary look to them, which makes them wearable not only on a hike but for any outdoor activity.

Comfort

These pants on our best hiking pants list offer a semi-elasticized waistband with a flat front appearance. We like that these pants have two zippered hand pockets and a security pocket along the leg. They do not have rear pockets or a way to secure the leg if you wish to roll them up on a warmer day.

The cut of the pants makes for a slimmer leg.

Durability

The TecWeave fabric of these pants is built for durability, but these pants do not have any extra reinforced areas. While these pants do offer good wind-resistance and a DWR, they may do better on less aggressive trails. Since they are not reinforced, you may want to watch for rugged branches.

They offer a good amount of stretch for mobility and have articulated knees for making the most of trails and climbing up large steep inclines.

Materials

These pants are great for the elements. We like the abrasion-resistant fabric. They are made from 94% nylon and 6% elastane which makes these pants breathable and lightweight. This also helps with the comfort level which is still very important when thinking about the best hiking pants. The knees are reinforced, and there is a gusseted crotch; we also really like this feature.

The Marmot Men's Arch Rock Pants have a non-adjustable waist, two non-zippered hand pockets, and two non-zippered rear pockets. There is a security zippered pocket on the side. Description

These are high-end, technical hiking pants. These are pants made for the serious hiker. They offer a lightweight, cotton, and polyester fabric perfect for hiking in warmer conditions. They have extra ventilation and are made with durable construction. You will have no problem moving, climbing, or hiking in these pants.

Of all the pants on our best hiking pants list, these, by far, are the most durable and may have the most bells and whistles. They are also, by far, the most expensive, but if you are looking for pants that will last a lifetime and will hold up to all that the trail has to offer, then these pants are worth the money.

Materials

The Fjallraven Men's Abisko Lite Trekking Trousers are made from four-way, stretch fabric and lightweight G-1000 Lite fabric. They are fast drying and lightweight. These pants can get wet and dry fast and won't be uncomfortable in the process.

Comfort

These pants provide a lot of stretch while also providing reinforced knees, leg endings, and a reinforced rear. The knee area and seat area provide a pre-shaped fit which makes them more comfortable than your average pant. There is also a high back for wearing a backpack. This provides less sag in the pant with the weight of a backpack and keeps the waistline from bunching. All around, we like this feature and wish it was available on more pants.

There are multiple pockets on these pants. There are zippered hand pockets, a leg flap, and mesh pockets on the inside. We like the zippered pockets but wish there were a few more on such a rugged pant.

One great feature for comfort is the long ventilation zippers that range from your hips to your knees. This ventilation provides a nice way to release heat on warm days.

We also like that the leg endings have a strap so you can adjust them to your liking and a boot hook that keeps them from riding up. This is a great added feature that you wouldn't always look for but would really appreciate out on the trail.

Durability

The Fjallraven Men's Abisko Lite Trekking Trousers are made to last years and go on many hikes with you. They are constructed with durability in mind so if you are a serious hiker, these are the pants for you. Hiking Conditions

These pants will hold up well in rugged conditions and a warmer climate. You won't have to worry about any tears or rubbing problems with these pants.

Mountain Khakis Men's Camber 104 Hybrid Classic Fit Pants

Description

The Mountain Khakis Men's Camber pants offer a slightly heavier fabric and a little less of a “hiking pant” look. These pants would be great for any guy who wanted to wear hiking pants out around town as well. These pants do not have all the bells and whistles of traditional hiking pants, but they would make great pants for any outdoor activities or for going on less rugged hikes.

Materials

The pants are constructed of a 65% cotton, 33% nylon, and 2% spandex blend. They have reinforced pocket bags and a diamond-shaped action gusset which we really like. The pants have triple-stitched seams and bar-tac reinforcements.

Comfort

The classic fit of the pants makes them have a more relaxed fit, and if you combine this with the cotton fabric, they make a very comfortable pant.

There are no zippered pockets, but there is a hidden right pocket which we like.

Durability

The Mountain Khakis Men's Camber pants are designed so they will not rip or tear on any seam or along any pocket. This added durability makes them great for hauling stuff in your pockets. They even have a “mudflap” reinforced, heel cuff to keep your boots or the ground from destroying your pants. We wish this feature was seen on more pants.

The Mountain Khakis Men's Camber pants aren't wind-resistant or water-resistant and may be a little too heavy in hot climates. There is also not a way to conveniently roll up the bottoms or convert them to a shorter length if you get too hot on a trail.

Hiking Conditions

These pants are great for working or hiking outdoors in the spring or fall. They may not be your best bet for rugged hiking in a variety of weather conditions but would be great on a ranch or a farm.

Warranty

Mountain Khakis has a warranty that allows you to return your pants up to one year in the event there is a manufacturing or workmanship defect. Their warranty information was easy to locate on their website, and the process seems easy to use.
